Original Apple Computer Lucite IPO tombstone (deal toy), 5˝ x 5.75˝ x .75˝, molded in the form of the company's iconic rainbow Apple logo to commemorate Apple's landmark December 1980 initial public offering. The front features a reproduction of the cover of Apple's IPO prospectus from December 12, 1980, and the reverse displays a reproduction of an Apple stock certificate overprinted "BANNED IN BOSTON." In fine condition, with light overall scuffing.
Apple's initial public offering on December 12, 1980, instantly became one of the most celebrated technology offerings in Wall Street history. Because Massachusetts regulators declined to qualify the offering under the state's ‘blue sky’ securities laws, individual investors in the state were prohibited from purchasing Apple shares at the IPO, giving rise to the tongue-in-cheek phrase ‘Banned in Boston.’ Commemorative Lucite tombstones bearing that inscription were produced for underwriters and other participants in the offering, transforming the regulatory decision into one of the most memorable pieces of Apple and Wall Street lore.
