Two scarce souvenir items from the historic 1883 opening of the Brooklyn Bridge:
Engraved invitation by Tiffany & Co. for the 1883 opening ceremonies of the Brooklyn Bridge, 9 x 6.5, reading: “The Trustees of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge request the honor of the presence of J. Fred Boyd, at the Opening Ceremonies, to take place on Thursday, May twenty-fourth, at two o’clock, P.M.”
Program for the "Opening Ceremonies of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge," held on May 24, 1883, two pages, 5.5 x 8.25, listing the program of exercises—to include music, prayers, addresses, and orations—and seating arrangements, with "Sec. D" reserved for "The President and Cabinet, Governor and Staff, United States Senators, Members of Congress, Governors of other States." Listed on the back are the trustees and officers of the bridge, and its chief engineer, A. Roebling.
In overall very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and slightly irregular toning to the program, and heavier irregular toning to the invitation. The Brooklyn Bridge officially opened on May 24, 1883, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn for the first time with its revolutionary steel-wire suspension design. Tens of thousands of people attended the ceremony, with President Chester A. Arthur and New York Governor Grover Cleveland leading the procession across. Heralded as an engineering marvel of its age, the bridge symbolized America’s growing industrial might and urban ambition.
