Original 1970s commercial storefront sign from Byte Shop Northwest, a pioneering regional franchise of the Byte Shop—the world’s first personal computer retail chain. Founded in the Pacific Northwest by Pat and Rick Terrell, relatives of Byte Shop founder Paul Terrell, Byte Shop Northwest expanded the chain’s revolutionary retail model into Oregon and Washington during the formative years of the personal computer industry. The large-format framed print measures 40˝ x 16˝ and features the company’s distinctive period logo and slogan, "Byte Shop: The Affordable Computer Store. Get In Touch With Tomorrow Today," and was produced for commercial display at the franchise’s early retail locations. In very good condition, with scattered surface scuffs.
Provenance: from the personal collection of Byte Shop founder Paul Terrell, who notes that the sign was rescued by Pat Terrell during the historic 1985 corporate buyout and structural rebranding by Pacific Bell.
While Paul Terrell’s original Mountain View Byte Shop is immortalized for ordering the first 50 Apple-1 computers, Byte Shop Northwest was the vital regional engine that proved computer retail could scale into a massive, multi-state corporate footprint. The Northwest stores catered directly to early tech visionaries, universities, and Boeing-area aerospace hobbyists who built the modern Pacific Northwest tech corridor. Because of the aggressive 1985 PacBell liquidation and corporate cleanup, physical storefront artifacts from Byte Shop Northwest are drastically rarer than the paper ephemera or computers sold inside them.
