Polish-born Jewish-American merchant and financier (1740–1785) who became one of the principal financial supporters of the American Revolution. Working with Robert Morris, he helped secure and convert vital funding for the Continental Congress, earning recognition as one of the foremost financiers of American independence. Complete issue of The Independent Gazetteer; or, The Chronicle of Freedom, four pages, 10.5 x 17, published in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 21, 1782. The front page features a remarkable group of advertisements placed by prominent members of Philadelphia's early Jewish community, including broker Haym Salomon, Revolutionary financier and broker Isaac Franks, and the brokerage firm Nones & Cohen, reflecting the central role of Jewish merchants and financiers in the commercial life of Revolutionary-era Philadelphia. Also of interest is a front-page report to the Pennsylvania General Assembly concerning the payment of public debt, signed in print by Benjamin Rush, Thomas Fitzsimons, Blair McClenachan, Charles Pettit, and John Ewing. The remaining pages contain extensive domestic and foreign news, commercial advertisements, public notices, and shipping intelligence.
