Circa 1914 Longines open-face pocket watch from the collection of longtime FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, 1.5˝ in diameter, featuring a silver-tone case with blue steel hands, applied Roman numerals accented by small faceted stones, and a subsidiary seconds dial. The reverse is engraved with Hoover's initials, "J.E.H." The movement is marked "Longines W. Co. Swiss," "3 Adj.," "15 Jewels," and numbered 3067398. In very good to fine condition, with light dents and scratches to the reverse, and the broken crystal removed, but present, and potentially replaceable. Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Scott R. Mohr, grandson of longtime FBI official John P. Mohr, stating that the material descended directly from his grandfather’s personal holdings and remained in the family until its present offering.
John P. Mohr (1910–1997) was one of J. Edgar Hoover's closest and most trusted aides during the final decades of his tenure as FBI director. After joining the Bureau in 1933, Mohr rose steadily through the ranks, ultimately retiring in 1972 as the FBI's fourth-ranking official. A favorite of both Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson, he played a key role in the Bureau's administration and was entrusted with numerous sensitive responsibilities. Following Hoover's death in May 1972, Mohr was selected to notify Acting Attorney General Richard Kleindienst and was charged with sealing Hoover's personal office, reflecting the extraordinary confidence Hoover and his inner circle placed in him.
