Two ALSs from R. B. Kitaj, both signed “Kitaj,” each penned on the reverse of a 5.75 x 4.25 postcard, one of which bears the image of Kitaj’s 1983 charcoal self-portrait. The handwritten letters, both addressed to Vera Russell, read:
February 18, 1985: “Dearest Lady of the Baltic Sailor, Alas, we meant to come to yr lecture and just discovered our dear Prof. Wollheim, had asked us particularly to come to his lecture and we agreed some weeks ago. Then, both cards arrived and they were for the same date and time. If we do get to his talk it will be the 1st experiment leaving Max with a sitter, but we'll have to begin. Could we have your talk here at 62 in person?”
No date: “Thanks for asking after us. We're quite low for now but plan to shape ourselves anew. I can't bear the phone. I only use it for Marlb., plumbers and doctors! When you'd like a 12 noon at Tootsies (my office) drop me a card and I'll be there or let you know. Max is a great joy to us, but little else is for the moment.” In overall fine condition.
