Description

The paper trail of the Apple-1: July 1976 bank statements revealing Apple’s surge from garage startup to working computer company

Early Wells Fargo Bank account statements prepared by the Los Altos Office for "Apple Computer Co.," three pages, 8.5 x 14, including a "Cash Mover Account" statement for the period from June 26–July 27, 1976, and a two-page checking account statement July 1–30, 1976.

The "Cash Mover" statement records a final balance of $5,043.79, after earning $21.31 in interest and incurring $7.96 in service charges. The checking account statement records total debits of $6,756.14, enumerating some 48 checks drawn on the account throughout the month of July, which included a $47.70 payment to IBM (check #167), $125 to Apple's first seed investor Elmber Baum (#181), $3430 to Kierulff Electronics (#182), $10.52 to Elmar Electronics (#185), $4.01 to Radioshack (#195), $9.18 to Tektronix (#198), and $17 to Apple's first bookkeeper, Elizabeth Holmes (#207).

Each of these checks, along with a 90-cent endorsement stamp fee receipt, was returned with the statement—it notes, "49 Items Enclosed"—and those listed above have been sold by RR Auction; Apple Computer Company check #207 is offered in the present sale as Lot #4002. The endorsement stamp fee receipt, along with the original Wells Fargo mailing envelope, accompanies these statements.

In overall fine condition.

Created less than four months after Apple’s official founding, these Wells Fargo statements capture the company at a pivotal moment of rapid transition: no longer just a garage enterprise, but an emerging business with cash flow, outside investment, vendor relationships, and a growing administrative infrastructure.

The July 1976 activity reflects the accelerated production of the Apple-1 computer following the company’s landmark order from the Byte Shop, with payments to electronics suppliers, technical firms, communications providers, and bookkeeping support offering a remarkable financial map of Apple’s earliest operations. These documents form an extraordinary paper trail of Apple’s birth—tracing the flow of funds behind the production of the Apple-1, the pioneering computer that transformed Jobs and Wozniak’s fledgling partnership into a company poised to reshape the personal computer industry.
