Educator and poet (1859-1929) best known for the lyrics to the iconic patriotic song 'America the Beautiful.' ANS, one page, 4.25 x 2.75, no date. Handwritten note from Katharine Lee Bates: "A discriminating selection exquisitely printed. I hope this will be a treasured volume all your years, and that poets yet unborn will come to be your friends." Included with the note is an unbound manuscript poetry book meticulously penned in an unknown hand and entitled "Pleasant Hours: An Anthology of Modern Verse which has already given the compiler many an hour of pleasure," containing selections by many of the leading English and Irish poets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Thomas Hardy, W. B. Yeats, Rudyard Kipling, A. E. Housman, John Masefield, Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, Robert Bridges, Alice Meynell, Francis Ledwidge, and Robert Nichols. In fine condition.
