Description

Steve McQueen's personally-owned lariat lasso, gifted to photographer Barry Feinstein. In very good to fine condition.

Steve McQueen’s cowboy roles were central to the image that made him famous: quiet, tough, self-contained, and more expressive through action than dialogue, his lasso skills adding to the authenticity of that persona. He first broke through as bounty hunter Josh Randall on the TV western Wanted: Dead or Alive, where his sawed-off Winchester and laconic style helped define his screen persona. In film westerns like The Magnificent Seven, McQueen’s confidence with riding, roping, and action-oriented movement made him feel less like an actor playing a cowboy and more like a natural frontiersman. Even as he moved beyond traditional westerns, that sense of hands-on cowboy competence remained part of his cool, independent screen identity.

McQueen and Barry Feinstein were close friends as well as photographer and subject. Feinstein’s access to McQueen came from trust and shared interests, especially fast cars and motorcycles; that rapport let him photograph McQueen in unusually candid settings, from racetracks to the set of Bullitt to relaxed off-duty moments. The result was a body of images that helped preserve McQueen’s 'King of Cool' persona while also showing a more intimate, unguarded side.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Estate of Barry Feinstein/Barry Feinstein Photography.
