Description

Steve McQueen's brown Resistol cowboy hat, gifted to photographer Barry Feinstein

Steve McQueen's personally-owned brown Resistol cowboy hat with decorative engraved silver band, gifted to photographer Barry Feinstein. The brown fur felt hat is stamped inside the band, "Resistol, Self-Conforming, Hand Creased," and "Longhorn Ranchwear, Dallas - Mesquite - Sherman, Texas." In very good to fine condition, with splitting along the edge of the inner band.

Steve McQueen’s cowboy roles were central to the image that made him famous: quiet, tough, self-contained, and more expressive through action than dialogue. He first broke through as bounty hunter Josh Randall on the TV western Wanted: Dead or Alive, where his sawed-off Winchester and laconic style helped define his screen persona. He carried that same controlled intensity into film westerns like The Magnificent Seven, often stealing scenes through small gestures rather than big speeches. Even when he moved beyond traditional westerns, McQueen kept something of the cowboy in him: a restless independence, physical confidence, and cool distrust of authority.

McQueen and Barry Feinstein were close friends as well as photographer and subject. Feinstein’s access to McQueen came from trust and shared interests, especially fast cars and motorcycles; that rapport let him photograph McQueen in unusually candid settings, from racetracks to the set of Bullitt to relaxed off-duty moments. The result was a body of images that helped preserve McQueen’s 'King of Cool' persona while also showing a more intimate, unguarded side.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Estate of Barry Feinstein/Barry Feinstein Photography.
