Description

Multi-character Mary Blair concept painting of Alice, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse at the celebrated Mad Tea Party of Wonderland

(Walt Disney Studios, 1951) Rare original concept painting by Mary Blair for Alice in Wonderland, depicting Alice, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse during the famous ‘Mad Tea Party’ sequence. Rendered in Blair's distinctive modernist style, the composition presents the whimsical gathering from an elevated perspective, with Alice observing the three Wonderland characters on a tea table surrounded by oversized cups, curling steam, manicured hedges, and a deep blue nighttime sky. Accomplished in tempera on 10 x 8.25 artist's board. In fine condition, with tack holes at the corners.

Mary Blair played a key role in shaping the visual style of Disney animation during the 1940s and early 1950s, contributing color styling and concept artwork for such classics as Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan. Her bold use of color, imaginative compositions, and highly stylized forms made her one of the most influential artists associated with the Disney studio. Blair later contributed designs for several Disney theme park attractions, including It's a Small World, and created the monumental mosaic mural that remains a centerpiece of Disney's Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World.
