Influential American writer, social theorist, and women's rights advocate (1860-1935) whose work challenged traditional gender roles and championed women's economic independence. She is best known for her landmark feminist writings, including The Yellow Wallpaper (1892), Women and Economics (1898), and the utopian novel Herland (1915). Two ALSs from Charlotte Perkins Gilman, signed “C. P. Gilman” and “Charlotte P. Gilman,” each penned on either side of her personal 6 x 7 letterhead and addressed to Canadian activist Laura Hughes Lunde. The earlier handwritten letter, December 31, 1929, in part: “My husband and his brother inherited an old house and a little property here in my native state, and the two families live here together, which is not pleasant – it never is. However, it is a beautiful old town. We have an acre, surrounded mainly by meadows, and I delight in a large garden, both vegetables and flowers.” The second letter, August 13, 1930, in part: “So Truman is married – and a father. He ought to be more human. Agnes is married too – hope she has or will have babies. And you have two boys. Good. I wanted a boy as well as a girl, but did not achieve it. I'd like to see them and you and have a good talk. Here I live in an old New England town, a sedimentary deposit of once vigorous people, heavily confused by a two-thirds admixture and low-grade aliens. But it is beautiful, quiet, clean, and we have a lovely old place with an acre about it, big trees in the garden.” In overall fine condition.
Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope for the 1930 letter, which bears Gilman's signature in the upper left return address field, and a first edition hardcover of The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, published by D. Appleton-Century Company of New York in 1935, which bears a gift inscription dated November 13, 1935, roughly three months after Gilman passed at the age of 75.
