ALS signed “Mina M. Edison,” penned on two 3.5 x 2 cards, no date, a handwritten letter to Barrett C. Kiesling and his wife: “The feeling that I have long known you is strong and it must be a case of ‘love at first sight’…I am grateful to God for lives like yours and thank you over and over for the joy you have given me while in Pasadena. Remember that if you are East that the doors of ‘Glenmont,’ Llewellyn Park, West Orange, N. J. are wide open to you.”
TLS from Charles Edson as Secretary of the Navy, official letterhead, 7 x 9.25, April 30, 1940, sent to Barrett C. Kiesling of MGM Pictures: “Upon my return to the office yesterday I found copies of your Studio News, which you so kindly sent me with your letter of April 16th. The photograph taken at the luncheon tendered me by Mr. Mayer recalls a very happy and pleasant occasion, and many thanks to you and Mr. Considine for these copies of the News.” The letter is affixed to the reverse of a frontispiece (bearing a facsimile Edison signature), which originated from the book below.
First edition of Edison's Open Door: The Life Story of Thomas A. Edison, a Great Individualist, by Alfred O. Tate, his private secretary, hardcover, 6 x 8.75, published by E. P. Dutton Company of New York in 1938, signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen, “To Barrett Kiesling, with kindest regards, Charles Edison, March 1, 1939.” A small transmittal envelope, ostensibly the envelope for the Mina letter, is affixed opposite the title page.
In overall very good to fine condition, with toning to the signed book page.
