Description

Three ink signatures of prominent American political leaders of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — William Jennings Bryan (“W. J. Bryan”), Al Smith (“Alfred E. Smith”), and Alexander H. Stephens (“Yours Respectfully, Alexander H. Stephens”) — on individual off-white slips and cards ranging in size from 4.25 x 2.75 to 5 x 3.25, each individually mounted to a backing sheet, with the Smith sheet bearing a collector's notation dating it to May 1927. In overall fine condition.

Representing three influential figures from distinct eras of American political history, this attractive grouping unites William Jennings Bryan (1860–1925), the populist Democratic leader, three-time presidential nominee, and famed “Great Commoner”; Alfred E. Smith (1873–1944), four-term governor of New York and the first Catholic nominated for president by a major political party; and Alexander H. Stephens (1812–1883), the longtime Georgia statesman who served as vice president of the Confederate States of America before returning to national political life after the Civil War. Together, the signatures span more than a century of American political development, from the sectional conflicts of the nineteenth century through the reform movements and presidential politics of the Progressive Era.
