Description

Pre-1896 British National Olympian Association medal for promoting physical education. Bronze-tone, 44 mm, 47 gm (including ribbon and suspension bar), the obverse depicting a classical female allegorical figure extending a laurel wreath toward a kneeling athlete, with a lion at her side and raised Latin text around the border: “Olympia Aedes Civitatis Vis.” The reverse, encircled by an oak-and-laurel wreath, bears the raised inscription: “National Olympian Association for Promoting Physical Education.” The medal is suspended from a red, white, and blue striped ribbon and an ornate oak-leaf top bar with a blank presentation tablet. The ribbon bears slight fraying and discoloration.

Founded in 1865 at the Liverpool Gymnasium by John Hulley, the National Olympian Association sought to advance physical education and reward athletic skill and strength through medals and prizes at annual public competitions. Hulley, together with William Penny Brookes and Ernst Ravenstein, helped organize the first National Olympian Games in 1866, placing this medal within the British athletic and physical-culture movement that preceded the modern Olympic Games. A scarce relic of the Victorian Olympic revival movement and an early expression of the ideals that would later find worldwide prominence through international Olympic competition.
