Description

First-place gilt silver medal awarded to an American trap shooter at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm

Winner's medal issued for the Stockholm 1912 Olympics. Gilt silver, 33 mm, 27 gm, by Erik Lindberg and Bertram Mackennal. The front depicts a victorious athlete holding a palm branch as he is crowned with a laurel wreath; the reverse depicts a herald proclaiming the start of the Olympic Games with a bust of Ling, founder of Swedish gymnastics, to his rear. The edge is engraved with the name of the recipient, "Frank Hall," who won the gold medal as a member of the American team in the men’s team trap (clay pigeons) competition. Solid gold medals – the last to be awarded at any Olympiad – were awarded to the first-place winners of individual events and a select few team/doubles/equestrian competitions, while gilt silver examples were given to the winners of team events.
