Description

Official vintage program for the “Eighteenth Annual Relay Race Carnival,” held at Franklin Field under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania on April 27, 1912, 32 pages, 6.75 x 10.25, which lists Jim Thorpe as a competitor representing the Carlisle Indian School in three field events printed on pages 23 and 24 within the contestant listings for Event No. 43 (High Jump), Event No. 44 (Shot Put), and Event No. 46 (Broad Jump). Issued just months before Thorpe’s legendary performance at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, where he captured gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon, the program captures the Native American multisport star at the height of his amateur athletic career, during the same season that established him as the world’s greatest all-around athlete.

Includes an original large-format football program for a game between Dickinson and the Carlisle Indians, held at Island Park in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on October 21, 1905. Carlisle’s famed football program, coached by Glenn “Pop” Warner, would soon become one of the most innovative and celebrated teams in American football history, producing legendary athletes including Jim Thorpe, who entered Carlisle in 1904 and began playing football there during the 1905 season. Although Thorpe is not specifically identified within the program, the piece dates directly to his earliest period at Carlisle, preceding both his national football fame and his historic triumph at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics.

In overall very good to fine condition, with light toning and handling wear.
