Description

Norwegian explorer (1872–1928) who navigated the Northwest Passage, fixed the position of the North Magnetic Pole, and was the first to reach the South Pole. Vintage sepia-tone 7 x 9 portrait photograph of Roald Amundsen by the Lomen Bros. studio, picturing the explorer clean-shaven and wearing a heavy Arctic expedition parka, prominently signed and inscribed in fountain pen, with Amundsen dating the signature to December 12, 1924. In fine condition, with fading to the inscription, and Amundsen (presumably) going over parts of his signature due to reduced ink flow. Accompanied by an original large-format 4 x 5 photographic negative of the same image, and a Byrd Antarctic Expedition II postal fragment canceled at “Little America, Antarctica” on January 30, 1935, during Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s second Antarctic expedition; the reverse bears annotations related to Albert Eilefsen, a member of the expedition’s dogsled party.

The Lomen Brothers Co. was a prominent photography studio established in Nome, Alaska, in 1908 by brothers Carl, Harry, Alfred, and Ralph Lomen. The studio documented a wide range of Alaskan and Arctic subjects, including mining operations, dogsled teams, ships, aviation, and Indigenous communities throughout Alaska and Canada. The company also acquired and reissued negatives from several other photographers, expanding its archive and commercial reach. Widely distributed through prints and postcards, Lomen Brothers photographs became an important visual record of early twentieth-century Alaska. In 1934, a catastrophic fire destroyed most of the studio’s archive, including tens of thousands of negatives and prints, and the business never reopened.
