First edition. London, England: Printed for J. Debrett, (Successor to Mr. Almon), opposite Burlington-House, Piccadilly, 1783. An important first edition Revolutionary War controversy volume published in the immediate aftermath of Yorktown, containing Lord Cornwallis’s public defense of his conduct during the 1781 campaign and his bitter dispute with Sir Henry Clinton over responsibility for Britain’s defeat in America. The work preserves extensive original correspondence between the two commanders and includes the folding table, “State of the Troops in Virginia,” detailing Cornwallis’s forces immediately before the surrender at Yorktown.
