Description

Revolutionary War-dated letterpress broadside, 6 x 5, issued by the State of New Hampshire in the House of Representatives on June 7, 1777, ordering “delinquent” towns and militia officers to complete their quotas of men for the Continental Army and dispatch them “immediately to the Army at Ticonderoga.” The text reads: “Voted, that all Military Officers of those Towns and Places, who are delinquent, in raising their Quota of Men for the Continental Army, be directed forthwith to furnish the same, either by Inlistment, or by draught from the Militia, and forward them immediately to the Army at Ticonderoga. And that it be recommended to all Civil Officers to be aiding and assisting the Military Officers to carry the same into effect. – And that all Military Officers be directed to make return of their having compleated their said Quota of Men as heretofore directed, at or before the Twentieth Day of June instant. And that all Officers, Civil and Military, Selectmen, Committees of Inspection and Safety, be required to apprehend and take up all Persons whom they shall know or suspect to be inlisted into the Continental Service, and carry them before some Magistrate to be dealt with according to Law.” Signed in type by Speaker pro tempore Joseph Badger and Secretary E. Thompson. Matted to an overall size of 9 x 8.25. In fine condition, with scattered foxing.

Issued during one of the most critical campaigns of the Revolutionary War, the broadside relates directly to American efforts to reinforce Fort Ticonderoga against the advancing British army under General John Burgoyne during the Saratoga campaign. New Hampshire played a vital role in supplying Continental forces in the northern theater, and this document reflects the mounting urgency faced by the revolutionary government in the weeks before Ticonderoga fell to the British on July 6, 1777. Issued just 29 days before that defeat, the broadside represents a direct – and ultimately unsuccessful – attempt to remedy the chronic undermanning that left the fortress vulnerable to Burgoyne’s advance. The troops these delinquent towns were ordered to furnish never arrived in sufficient time to alter the outcome. A scarce and historically significant Revolutionary War broadside tied to the defense of Ticonderoga and the opening phase of the Saratoga campaign.
