Description

British peer's crimson velvet ceremonial robe, traditionally attributed to the Earl of Chesterfield, featuring an ermine-trimmed collar, three horizontal ermine bars separated by ornate gold metallic lace, cream silk lining, and black fastening ribbons. The robe retains a partially excised interior ownership label reading "EARL OF…," consistent with its longstanding attribution. Includes its original black-painted metal storage case, 30.25 x 24.5 x 5.5, bearing an engraved brass plaque reading, "The Right Honble. Earl of Chesterfield's Coronation Robes," as well as its matching crimson drawstring storage bag with tasseled cord, the front bearing evidence of a neatly removed identification patch. In very good to fine condition, with some light soiling, scattered small holes, and an intense odor of mothballs.

Created in 1628, the Earldom of Chesterfield is a hereditary title in the Peerage of England long associated with the influential Stanhope family. As one of Britain's titled peers, the Earl of Chesterfield was entitled to participate in major royal state ceremonies, including the coronation of a new sovereign, where members of the peerage appeared in distinctive scarlet robes trimmed with ermine denoting their rank. Preserved with its engraved storage case, this ceremonial ensemble represents a tangible link to the pageantry and traditions surrounding the British monarchy and House of Lords.
