Description

(Walt Disney Studios, 1992) Original hand-painted cel of Gaston created for Disney's 'The Art of Beauty and the Beast' Sotheby's sale in 1992, overlaid on a lithograph copy background from Beauty and the Beast, showing a cafe in a village square. Character image measures 10 x 8.5, with a mat opening of 10 x 16. Framed to an overall size of 37 x 32.5; signed on backing by David Pruiksma, who was the supervising animator of Mrs. Potts and Chip. In fine condition.

Provenance: Part of Lot 25, The Art of Beauty and the Beast, Sotheby's, October 17, 1992; accompanied by the original auction catalog, which explains: "The cel set-ups offered in this sale include background paintings actually used in the making of Beauty and the Beast, which was produced by The Walt Disney Company. The cels accompanying the backgrounds were specially created from original animation drawings, rendered by Disney animators and used in the production of the film. No original production cels were created in the making of Beauty and the Beast." The piece was later disassembled and the background sold off separately.
