Official badge from the 64th International Olympic Committee session held in Rome, Italy, in 1966, measuring 32 mm x 63 mm, featuring a golden ancient Roman structure over the Olympic rings and white background, with blue enamel border and silver text to bottom: "LXIV Sessione, Roma 22-29 Aprile 1966,” with a blue enamel bar suspended below that reads, “C.N.O.” Reverse of badge is marked “Stab. Artistici Fiorentini, Firenze.”
The 64th IOC Session held in Rome in April 1966 is best remembered for the selection of the host cities for the 1972 Olympic Games. During the session, Sapporo, Japan, was chosen to host the XI Olympic Winter Games, while Munich, West Germany, was selected as the host city for the Games of the XX Olympiad. Munich’s selection marked the return of the Olympic Games to Germany for the first time since the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics, while Sapporo became the first Japanese city awarded the Winter Games, following the success of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
