Original semi-glossy 8 x 10 photo of Arikara scout Goose, shown in profile, facing left, with a composed, dignified expression, as captured by David Francis Barry, a pioneering photographer of the American West, taped by its edges to its worn original 8.75 x 12.75 mount. Goose's hair is parted and wrapped in fur, beaded necklaces cascade across his chest, and he holds a catlinite pipe and decorative tamper. Blindstamped "Copyright by D. F. Barry" toward the bottom. In very good to fine condition, with tape stains to the top and bottom edges, easily matted out.
Goose, an Arikara scout, served as lead scout for George Armstrong Custer during the 1874 Black Hills Expedition, a role that later led many to blame him for opening the region to white incursions. Despite this controversy, he continued to serve as a scout and was wounded during the Reno engagement at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
