Description

Collection of 29 official multicolored event programs from the London 1948 Summer Olympics, comprised of complete day-by-day runs for basketball (13 programs), swimming (9 programs), and wrestling (7 programs), issued for the first Olympics held after World War II. Each retains the classic London XIV Olympiad cover design featuring the Olympic rings and Westminster imagery, with vividly colored wraps identifying the individual dates of competition.

The basketball group consists of a complete 13-program run issued for play at Harringay Arena, spanning July 30-August 13, 1948, including programs dated: Friday, July 30; Saturday, July 31; Monday, August 2; Tuesday, August 3; Wednesday, August 4; Thursday, August 5; Friday, August 6; Saturday, August 7; Monday, August 9; Tuesday, August 10; Wednesday, August 11; Thursday, August 12; and Friday, August 13, 1948. These programs document the Olympic basketball tournament won by the United States, led by Alex Groza and Ralph Beard of the celebrated Kentucky “Fabulous Five.”

The swimming group consists of a complete 9-program run issued for competition at the Empire Pool, Wembley, spanning July 29-August 7, 1948, including programs dated: Thursday, July 29; Friday, July 30; Saturday, July 31; Monday, August 2; Tuesday, August 3; Wednesday, August 4; Thursday, August 5; Friday, August 6; and Saturday, August 7, 1948. The programs cover the aquatic events of the London Games, highlighted by the performances of American stars Ann Curtis, Jimmy McLane, and Walter Ris.

The wrestling group consists of a complete 7-program run issued for events at Empress Hall, Earls Court, spanning July 30-August 6, 1948, including programs dated: Friday, July 30; Saturday, July 31; Monday, August 2; Tuesday, August 3; Wednesday, August 4; Thursday, August 5; and Friday, August 6, 1948. Together, the programs chronicle the Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling competitions contested during the austerity-era “Games of Recovery.”

In overall very good to fine condition, with expected handling wear and ownership notations.
