Description

AC/DC's explosive frontman, Bon Scott, documents life on tour: "All the gigs have been pretty good so far... I've been drunk since the beginning of June"

Outstanding archive of materials from the collection of AC/DC road manager/tour director Dawn M. Blouin, highlighted by seven items signed by Bon Scott—three autograph letters, two handwritten postcards, a New Year's card, and an oversized envelope, mostly circa 1978. The content is personal in nature and includes references to touring, drinking, and his rock 'n' roll lifestyle, along with some humorous and candid commentary.

Highlights:

- ALS signed "Bon," one page on a postcard depicting Geronimo, postmarked at Pittsburgh, September 9, 1978, in part: "I called about a dozen times between getting home from the gig & going bye bye's tonight but cha wasn't home. Maybe I'll try tomorrow… reckon I will. Wish I was with you. I feel as mean as this cat looks."

- ALS signed "Bon," one page inside a greeting card featuring artwork by George Barbier, no date, in part: "This is an exciting night in Down Town Toledo Ohio. (At least that's where I think I am) & it's Sunday to boot. Fuck Aerosmith & it's 'Tour of Lost Cities.' Why do we have to help them find them. I must have dozed off for a couple of hours this afternoon & everybody seems to have gone out & I have no money… & no where to go & fuck all to do but plenty of time to do it in. I'm glad I bought this card today to give me something to write you on. (I hate hotel stationary.) I guess Joella has returned by now with tales of 'On the Road' in New York. It was a shit not having you come with her but you'd have been pretty bored had you come. We played a couple of dull places. I'm so glad there's only two more gigs & three more days to go."

- ALS signed "Bon," three pages, Holiday Inn letterhead, no date but postmarked at Stockholm, October 11, 1978. In part: "Made it… I arrived in London at about 10:30 AM today. (Or actually yesterday as it's now about 2:00 AM Tuesday.) It wasn't an unpleasant flight as I sat next to a couple of interesting, friendly guys on both legs (of the flight…) The only asshole part of the trip was the cab ride from Heathrow Airport to the hotel as there was a smash on the freeway which held up traffic no end. I guess I slept from midday till about 7:00 PM. Refused to answer the phone although it rang most of the day & went out to eat & see a couple of friends at about 9:00 o'clock. Right now I'm sitting back in the hotel room with my half empty bottle of Black Jack writing a letter. The bar's closed…everybody's asleep & the T.V.'s finished…I just ate a lump of black Nepalese hash that Billy gave me this afternoon so it should start happening soon…I went to a gay friend of mine's place tonight & he told me that it's been totally boring the last couple of months & that he's going to San Francisco soon as he gets his green card. I just caught up on who's up who & how far & it seems that most people here are up themselves a fuckin' long way. Oh how things change. So say hi to everybody for me." Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Bon Scott's own hand.

- ALS signed "Bon," two pages, Hotel Rotmischer Kaiser Dortmund letterhead, no date. In part: "Good morning baby. Hope all is well on the west coast. No doubt the sky is clear & the temperature is in the 90s… If it is don't tell me about it. It's fuckin' cold here at the moment & don't let the above address fool ya 'cause actually I'm in a room ten stories over Amsterdam. We're playing a gig about an hour & a half out of town tonight & we played Amst. last night or actually it was in the afternoon so I was pissed stupid by six o'clock & then after the show Atlantic took us out to dinner at a French restaurant & we kicked on there till about ten after which I lost consciousness till I woke about one o'clock today. I'm happy to say that all the gigs have been pretty good so far with one or two actually being incredible but things have been busy with a lot of travel so I haven't been able to get into much trouble though I must say my alcohol intake has doubled. I was thinking about it today & I figured out I've been drunk since the beginning of June. I'm going to send you an itinerary for England as I'm afraid the European one was a bit late…I'm sure you'll 'love' England…At least you can understand the bastards. I'm O.K. in Germany or at least I can get by but as for the rest of the continent I'm fucked. But I must admit it's not been all that bad on the whole but I'll be glad to get out of the place. We've only been here fifteen days or so & it's been a relatively short tour for us but God only knows how we used to spend six weeks here at a time."

- ALS signed "Bon," one page on a 'Good News Productions' postcard, in part: "By the time you get this I'll have phoned already & asked… No, begged… for your forgiveness. It's not that I haven't thought of you… quite the contrary. I guess I have to say that I've been either too busy or just too fuckin' lazy (I think maybe the latter.) Anyway as soon as I get an English itin. I'll send it to you. Maybe you'll come to London… hope so. My love to you."

- "Season's Greetings" card featuring a gilt-embossed image of a sleigh ride, signed and inscribed inside in blue felt tip, :"To Dawn, Joella & the lovely Brooke, Bon, x."

- Oversized airmail envelope addressed by Bon Scott to Dawn Blouin in West Los Angeles, signed on the reverse in blue ballpoint, "Bon."

- three scraps of paper with handwritten notes by Bon Scott, including the Paris address of Bernard Bonvoisin—one of his best friends, with whom he recorded the song 'Ride On.'

Other items include: Blouin's personal day planner for 1978, noting days that she received letters from Bon, with a 1980 AC/DC backstage pass affixed inside the front cover; two color 35mm slides of AC/DC in concert; ten of Blouin's backstage tour passes; Blouin's resume and business card; three original vintage photographs of Bon Scott; and the itinerary for AC/DC's Autumn 1978 European Tour. In overall very good to fine condition.

This exceptional correspondence offers a rare, unfiltered window into Bon Scott’s life at a pivotal moment in AC/DC’s ascent to international stardom. Written during the band’s relentless 1978 touring schedule, the letters capture his distinctive voice—by turns irreverent, humorous, and introspective—while vividly illustrating the realities of life on the road and the personal relationships behind his explosive stage persona. They are particularly striking in light of Scott’s death in London on February 19, 1980, at the age of thirty-three from acute alcohol poisoning, as they contain his own candid, often wry commentary on drinking—“I’ve been drunk since the beginning of June,” “my half empty bottle of Black Jack,” “my alcohol intake has doubled”—revealing a pattern he openly acknowledged as integral to his touring life and adding a poignant, human dimension to his enduring legacy.
