Description

Two swatches of silver exterior fabric attested to belonging to the LZ 129 Hindenburg, the famed rigid airship that burst into flames and crashed while attempting to land at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937. The swatches, 2.5˝ x 1.5˝ and 2˝ x 1.75˝, are accompanied by a TLS from aviation photographer and Metropolitan Air Mail Cover Club (MACC) member Bill Schneider, Jr., sent to another collector in 1952, which reads, in part: “I took Hindenburg pictures on May 6th 1937 – all the set. Walked away when it happened – lost 7 friends on board. Need a piece of fabric?” Written as an aside in correspondence between aviation memorabilia collectors, the passage carries the weight of firsthand witness: Schneider places himself at Lakehurst during the disaster, recalls friends lost aboard the airship, and casually references providing 'a piece of fabric,' directly linking the accompanying swatches to material salvaged from the crash site. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope.
