Virginia-born career soldier (1832–1865) who served in the U.S. Army before becoming a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War. He fought with distinction at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, was the first former U.S. Army officer captured while serving the Confederacy in 1861, and was killed in action at Hatcher’s Run, Virginia, in February 1865.
