Description

Two original Twitter ‘hashtag’ displays from the company's New York offices at 249 West 17th Street in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. Used as corporate branding fixtures during the period when the hashtag became synonymous with Twitter's role in shaping online conversation, the displays date to the era before the company's 2023 rebranding as X. The group consists of an illuminated rust-finished steel hashtag display measuring 38˝ x 48˝ x 6˝, fitted with 30 exposed marquee-style bulbs, 29 of which remain operational, and retaining its original hanging hardware, ‘Saw & Steel’ maker's label, and power cord; and a separate white hashtag-form display measuring 27˝ x 36˝ x 4˝, constructed of painted foam-composite material. Together, the pair represents two distinct interpretations of one of the most recognizable visual symbols associated with the Twitter platform and its influence on digital communication. In overall very good to fine condition, with noticeable cracking, paint loss, and chipping to the foam display.

Founded in 2006, Twitter grew into one of the world's most influential social media platforms, serving as a major forum for news, politics, entertainment, sports, and public conversation. Among the features most closely associated with the platform was the hashtag, which became a widely recognized symbol of online engagement and social discourse. Twitter's New York offices in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood served as a major center of the company's operations during its years of growth and expansion. Displayed there before the company's rebranding as X, these hashtag displays survive as distinctive artifacts from Twitter's formative years as a leading social media company.
