Description

American cartoonist known for his prolific and offbeat work. He created Mister Boffo, Willy ’N Ethel, Cats With Hands, and more than two dozen other comic series. His strip Willy ’N Ethel ran for over 20 years. In 2000, he was named the ‘World’s Most Prolific Cartoonist’ by Guinness World Records. Two original hand-inked single-panel comics by Joe Martin, both accomplished in mixed media on off-white 8.5 x 9.75 sheets, signed in the lower right corner by the artist, "Joe Martin,” who dates the works to August 13, 2007, and September 18, 2007. The two comic strips show contrasting, humorous takes on space travel. The first depicts a rocket launch being closely watched from mission control, while an astronaut emerges from a restroom, with upper caption text, “Close but no cigar award, almost the first manned space flight.” The second imagines a future where space travel has become routine and affordable, with ordinary people casually riding through space in a car-like vehicle, with upper caption text: “The world and the way it will be when space travel finally becomes affordable to everyone." Both sheets are embellished with affixed crosshatch patterns, and the “affordable” strip is signed and inscribed in the lower border in pencil, “To Richard - Good luck, Joe.” In overall fine condition.
