Description

Three unflown prototype certificates prepared for the Skylab manned missions, 8 x 10.5, developed as an alternative to carrying currency for the purposes of certification and record keeping by the National Aeronautic Association. While these certificates say that they were "flown onboard" the Skylab missions, they are believed to be non-flown prototypes and of significant importance in the development and refinement of the process of certifying a flight world record. All bear the facsimile signatures of Brooke E. Allen and Sigurd A. Sjoberg. In overall very good to fine condition, with overall mottled foxing.

In the aftermath of the Apollo 15 postal cover scandal investigation, NASA implemented new restrictions governing personal items astronauts could carry aboard spacecraft. One of these measures prohibited astronauts from bringing currency on their missions—a rule that remains in place today.

With the advent of modern telemetry and live broadcast coverage, the practice of using signed, serial-numbered currency as a means of documenting flight events became obsolete. In response, NASA and the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) collaborated on prototype non-monetary certificates intended to formally certify spaceflight records.
