Partly-printed DS, one page, 31.75 x 20.5, December 31, 1874. Document headed, "Muster Roll of Captain Fredrick M. Crandal, Company 'A' of the Twenty Fourth Regiment of Infantry, Army of the United States, Pay Roll…from the 31 day of October…to the 31 day of December, 1874." The document lists the names and ranks of the men in the regiment—totaling 54 active troops, with one discharged and one transferred—along with remarks relating to their pay. The reverse notes their assignment, "The Company remains on duty at Ringgold Barracks, Texas, during the time for which mustered," and is signed in ink by Captain F. M. Crandal of the 24th Infantry, and Colonel Edward Hatch of the 9th Cavalry. In very good to fine condition, with some light stains and minor fold splits.
The 24th Infantry Regiment, known as one of the Buffalo Soldier regiments, was organized on November 1, 1869; all of the enlisted soldiers were Black, either veterans of the U.S. Colored Troops or freedmen—among the names listed here are Moses Brooks, Joseph Brown, James Campbell, Henry Houston, John Johnson, Joseph Merryweather, John Miller, Anthony Pitts, Lewis Staley, Thomas Brown, and Charles Jackson. Its missions included garrisoning frontier posts, fighting Native Americans, protecting roadways against bandits, and guarding the border between the United States and Mexico.
