Description

American frontierswoman, sharpshooter, and storyteller (1852–1903) remembered as one of the Old West's most colorful figures. Original 3.5 x 5 albumen photograph of Martha Jane Canary, better known as 'Calamity Jane,' affixed to a black 5.5 x 6.5 mount, captioned within the image: "Calamity Jane, Gen. Crook's Scout. Copyrighted by H. R. Locke, 1895." Captured in a full-length pose, this remarkable portrait exudes the rugged independence that defined Calamity Jane's legacy. She stands confidently, dressed in traditional Western attire: a wide-brimmed hat, fringed buckskin jacket, and sturdy trousers tucked into boots. A bandolier of ammunition crosses her waist, and she grips a long rifle at her side, reinforcing her reputation as a skilled scout and sharpshooter. In fine condition. An evocative and iconic representation of one of the American West’s most enduring figures.
