Description

Unique Carousel Club archive filled with checks signed by Jack Ruby, plus an immigration document for a limbo dancer

Archive of documents and ephemera related to the Carousel Club, highlighted by eight Jack Ruby autographs. Largely dating to the months preceding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, this material captures Ruby in his role as a Dallas nightclub operator, offering a rare snapshot of his everyday business activities just before the act that would make him infamous—the killing of JFK's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. The archive includes:

- 6 Merchants State Bank checks, all filled out and signed by Ruby, "Carousel Club, Jack Ruby," dated from July 8–November 8, 1963.

- 1 Industrial National Bank customer draft check, filled out and signed by Ruby, "Carousel Club, Jack Ruby," September 5, 1963.

- 1 "Petition to Classify Nonimmigrant as Temporary Worker" document, signed four times (twice in cursive, and twice in print) by Jack Ruby, for the employment of an entertainer specializing in "limbo dancing."

- 1 Dallas Power & Light Company bill, issued to Jack Ruby.

- 1 postcard written to Jack Ruby, July 31, 1963, in part: "I'm going to bring you a couple of leopards & take back my dogs."

- 3 photostat music sheets credited to Jack Ruby and Robert Moss, entitled, "Stop and Think It Over," "Quit Now," and "Try Me Baby."

- 1 letter written to Jack Ruby from Pappy Dolsen, in part: "I am very sorry about Chelo's decision in wanting to come to work at another Club here and turning your offer down. Jack, these things are beyond my control and it hurts me to think that you feel that I am doing something underhanded, or, as you put it—'fishy'…Jack, I do not intend to become involved in any 'hassles' regarding competition between any clubs or operators."

- 2 promotional flyers for burlesque shows at "The New Carousel."

- 2 promotional cards advertising, "The Carousel Presents Miss Mili Perele."

- 1 letter signed by Ralph Paul, January 22, 1964, advising that "the Carousel Club, Dallas, Texas is now doing business as the Big D Copa and there has been no change in ownership."

- 1 Western Union telegram, July 5, 1962, confirming a "contract between Jack Ruby and Miss Peggy Steele."

- 1 lengthy, 30-page packet entitled "Rules Governing Dance Halls," issued by the city of Dallas.

In overall fine condition.
