(Walt Disney Studios, 1959) Masterful original mini panorama concept painting by Eyvind Earle for Sleeping Beauty, which depicts Briar Rose and Prince Phillip in a forest during the memorable 'Once Upon a Dream' musical sequence. Earle’s trademark plants and textured trees add an engrossing detail that succeed in pulling focus to the work’s central color and characters, Briar Rose and Prince Phillip, the former leaning against a tree with her berry basket and the latter shown walking away with a broad smile. In the film’s final product, Briar Rose, nonplussed by the sudden appearance of the prince, whisks behind a tree to steal a glance as Phillip continues his serenade. Accomplished in gouache on 17.25 x 6 artist's board, signed in the lower right corner in light purple paint, "Eyvind Earle." In fine condition, with tack holes to corners.
Legendary Disney artist Eyvind Earle was Sleeping Beauty's production designer, and Disney gave him a significant amount of freedom in designing the settings and selecting colors for the film. Earle also painted the majority of the backgrounds himself, and his stylistic influence is readily apparent in the final product.
