Description

Original granite block of foundation stone from London Bridge, measuring 5˝ x 4˝ x 1.75˝ and weighing 3.5 pounds, featuring affixed plates to the top and front faces. The top plate, approved by Harold K. King, city engineer of the Corporation of London, attested the stone as an “Authentic piece of London Bridge,” and the front plate reads: “London Bridge / This Bridge Serves as a Noble and Enduring Monument to the Strong Bonds of Friendship that Exist Between America and England / This Foundation Stone, Symbolizing Nearly 2000 Years of History and Tradition, Was Laid by the Right Honorable, the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Gilbert Inglefield G.B.E., T.D., M.A., in the Presence of the Honorable Jack Williams, Governor of Arizona, September 23, 1968.” The left and right sides of the plate feature the names of Robert P. McCulloch, founder of Lake Havasu City, and C. V. Wood, Jr., master planner of Lake Havasu City. In fine condition.

London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, was originally built in the 1830s over the River Thames in London, England. Purchased in 1968 by Robert P. McCulloch, the bridge’s exterior granite blocks were dismantled and transported to Arizona, where they were used to clad a new reinforced concrete bridge. Completed in 1971 alongside the Bridgewater Channel Canal, the reconstructed bridge connects mainland Lake Havasu City to Pittsburgh Point. McCulloch, who founded the planned community in 1964, also hired C. V. Wood—chief developer of Disneyland—to design Lake Havasu City’s distinctive road system. The bridge was rededicated on October 10, 1971.
