Reverend William Winterbotham (1763–1829), a British Baptist minister, was imprisoned for expressing liberal political views in his sermons. During his confinement, he compiled this extensive history of the United States, South America, and the West Indies, drawing together geographical, commercial, political, and philosophical observations on the New World. Richly illustrated with maps, views, and natural history plates, Winterbotham’s work remains one of the most substantial late-18th-century English publications on America.
