Unique extra-illustrated book featuring bound-in autographs of Jefferson and Lafayette: Lafayette in Virginia. First edition. Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins Press, 1928. Hardcover bound in blue crushed morocco gilt by Donnelley, covers with a border of fillets and a decorative roll, gilt-lettered spine in six compartments, 8 x 10.5, 64 pages, extra-illustrated with 35 engraved portraits of subjects referred to in the book, plus a clipped Thomas Jefferson free frank signature and an ALS by the Marquis de Lafayette, dated September 26, 1822. In Lafayette's letter, he excuses his long absence from the United States, in part (translated): "We are…engaged in a general struggle of the rights of mankind…Italy is still under the insolent and bloody yoke of detested masters…Under these circumstances friends of liberty cannot withdraw their attendance." He goes on to give some details of his family, noting that he has just been "raised…to the title of great grandfather," and regrets that public affairs do not permit him to enjoy his family and home as much as he would like. He ends with a comment on "the horrors committed in Greece by the ferocious Musulmans." In fine condition, with Lafayette's letter silked on the reverse and minor wear to the spine.
