Description

Historic book compiling significant early American papers: The Constitutions of the Several Independent States of America; The Declaration of Independence; and the Articles of Confederation Between the Said States. To which are now added, the Declaration of Rights…arranged, with a preface and dedication, by the Rev. William Jackson. Second edition. London: Printed for J. Stockdale, 1783. Hardcover bound original pale gray boards with paper spine, 5.5 x 9, 472 pages, with frontispiece engraved portrait of George Washington by W. Sharp. Book condition: G+/None, with wear and scuffing to boards, spine worn and darkened, minor repairs to joints; textblock clean and fresh. Accompanied by a custom-made quarter-leather clamshell case.

First published in 1781, this work marked the earliest collected printing of the constitutions of the thirteen original states, together with the defining governmental documents of the new nation. This second English edition is especially notable as the first to include “The Provisional Peace Treaty between Britain and the United States,” which had not appeared in print in earlier editions.
