Description

English poet, satirist, and politician (1621–1678) who sat in the House of Commons during the mid-17th century, best known for his Three-volume book set: The Works of Andrew Marvell, Esq., Poetical, Controversial, and Political, containing many Original Letters, Poems, and Tracts, never before printed, with a New Life of the Author, by Capt. Edward Thompson, Vols. I–III. First edition thus. London: Printed for the Editor by Henry Baldwin, 1776. Hardcover bound in quarter-calf with marbled boards, 9.5 x 11.75, totaling 1790 pages. Book condition: VG/None, with mottled foxing to title pages and endpapers, bumped and worn corners, and the bookplates of Robert Herring and Christopher Turnor Stoke Rochford Library affixed inside.

An important and luxurious edition of Marvell’s collected works, edited by Captain Edward Thompson and issued at a moment of heightened Whig political activity, this edition is notable for publicizing Marvell’s controversial poems in praise of Oliver Cromwell—previously suppressed for their anti-monarchical tone—and for bringing together, for the first time, the full scope of his poetry and prose, emphasizing his reputation as a defender of constitutional liberty. Drawing on extensive source materials, Thompson’s ambitious compilation attracted an influential list of subscribers, including John Wilkes, Edmund Burke, David Garrick, and American patriots Samuel Adams and John Hancock.
