Description

Scarce original 1860 United States presidential election ballot for Massachusetts, 5 x 12, the top of which features the surnames of Republican candidates Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin above a political ‘Republican Ticket’ engraving of Lincoln’s portrait. The ballot also lists numerous local politicians, including John A. Andrew for Governor and John Z. Goodrich for Lieutenant-Governor. In fine condition, with edgewear and tape-repaired tears.

During the mid-19th century, Americans voted using preprinted ballots supplied by political parties, often distributed through local partisan newspapers. These ballots typically listed candidates from a single party only, making a voter’s political allegiance immediately apparent at the polls.

The 1860 U.S. presidential election in Massachusetts was held on November 2, 1860. Voters selected 13 electors, all of whom supported Republican Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln won the state by 42.57%, earning 62.80% of the popular vote—his third strongest state performance after Vermont and Minnesota.
