Rare ‘Wide Awakes’ brass match safe from circa 1860-1861, measuring 2.25˝ x 2˝ x 2˝, the front featuring a carved profile portrait of Abraham Lincoln, ostensibly in bone, fastened to the container with two brass pins. The bottom of the case features a textured surface for striking matches, and the upper lid is engraved, “The Wide Awakes.” In fine condition. The Wide Awakes were a highly visible, youth-driven Republican campaign organization known for torch-light parades, uniforms, and disciplined public displays. Objects associated with them are scarce, and personal items—as opposed to paper ephemera—are rarer still.
