Partly-printed DS, signed “Henry Wells" and "Wm. G. Fargo,” one page, 12.25 x 8.25, October 19, 1865. Handsomely engraved stock certificate for 16 shares in the American Express Company, issued to Lewis Einstein, of New York. Signed at the conclusion by Henry Wells as president, William Fargo as secretary, and Alex Holland as treasurer. Includes a second stock certificate for 5 shares in the American Merchants Union Express Company, dated December 26, 1868, signed at the conclusion by William Fargo as president of the company, and countersigned by J. N. Knapp and E. P. Ross. In very good to fine condition, with light irregular toning to the dual-signed document. Accompanied by an 1867 stock certificate for 30 shares in the Merchants Union Express Company, signed at the conclusion by E. P. Ross as president, and J. N. Knapp as secretary.
Henry Wells (1805-1878) was a co-founder, with William Fargo (1818-1881), of both the American Express Company and Wells Fargo & Company.
