Description

Attractive 7.5 x 4.25 swatch of brown embroidered sofa fabric, left over from the restoration of the White House overseen by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. In very fine condition.

Accompanied by a detailed 1983 letter of provenance on White House letterhead from Norma Arata, addressed to noted collector Raleigh DeGeer Amyx, in part: "It is with pleasure that I present to you some of the fabric which was left over from the material used in the Main Hallway to cover two Victorial sofas, following the Restoration of the White House under the supervision of First Lady, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. The Hallway sofas were located near the White House Diplomatic Reception Room. The fabric is a brown horsehair, in keeping with the original tradition…

Larry Arata came to the White House in 1961, at the personal invitation of the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. He had been recommended to her by Mrs. Paul Mellon because he was such a superior craftsman. Accordingly, Larry lived at the White House during the entire restoration and literally upholstered each piece of furniture in the White House during the Kennedy Restoration. I met my husband, Larry Arata, at the White House in 1961, and we were married on February 20, 1963. This was only eight months before the Assassination of President Kennedy."
