A direct descendant of Asteroids, Atari’s Space Duel was built on the same rotate-and-thrust, screen-wrapping space shooter formula, but expanded in almost every way. Instead of monochrome rocks, you blast colorful geometric shapes, enemy ships, and mines on a vivid color vector display, with an added shield button and occasional bonus rounds for extra points. Visually, the game was an upgrade over Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe, with brighter, more complex vector effects and a striking cabinet featuring split red/green controls.
Historically, Space Duel represents Atari’s first and only multiplayer vector game. Space Duel includes multiple modes: solo ship, competitive two-player, and co-op modes, the latter where two ships are tethered together, resulting in a chaotic but memorable gaming experience. While it never matched the mainstream fame of Asteroids, Space Duel remains a cult favorite among vector arcade collectors and retro gamers.
