Description

Two limited edition color satin-finish 16 x 20 photographs of the initially unreleased front and back cover 'toilet' artwork for the Rolling Stones' masterpiece Beggars Banquet, both signed, titled, and numbered on the reverse in black felt tip by the photographer, "Barry Feinstein, Rolling Stones, (Beggar's Banquet), Hollywood, CA, 1968, 4/25." Reverse features "Kodak Professional Endura" watermarks. In fine condition.

To make this cover, the artists—photographer Barry Feinstein, with designers Tom Wilkes and Michael Vosse—brought Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to a car repair shop in Los Angeles which was known to have a particularly vile bathroom. Given crayons and felt pens, the two Stones decorated the walls with typical-looking graffiti that incorporated a track listing and credits. Both Decca in the UK and London in the US refused to release the originally planned 'toilet' cover, resulting in a dispute that caused a months-long delay of the album's release. In the end, they took the cover art to the other extreme and made it look like a formal wedding invitation. The 'toilet' cover would eventually be used in advertising and for most CD reissues of Beggars Banquet.

From the personal collection of Barry Feinstein and accompanied by a letter of authenticity from his estate.
