Apparel collection of 14 items from the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics, consisting of clothing formats like hats, coats, pants, and sweaters manufactured by official suppliers like White Ram, Sun Ice, Murray Merkley, and Smithbilt Hats, with the majority of the items, except for the pants, featuring the emblem of the Calgary Games to the exterior. The inner tags for some of the items are marked in felt tip as belonging to John Nixon, chairman of the Bobsleigh Committee of the XV Olympic Winter Games. The items include:
- Cambridge tan suede blazer or sports coat, no size (likely large), with a gold-tone Calgary emblem pin to the left lapel
- Cambridge blue blazer or sports coat, size 44, with silver-tone waist and cuff buttons bearing the Calgary Game logo
- Two off-white felt (wool) cowboy hats by Smithbilt Hats, sizes 6 ⅞ and 7 ⅛, both hats retain their original bands with feathers
- Sun Ice full-length winter coat in white and gray with yellow accents, size large
- Sun Ice winter jacket with yellow, gray, and white color pattern, size large, with matching gray Sun Ice snow pants, size 38
- Sun Ice winter jacket with yellow, gray, and white color pattern, no size (likely small/medium), with matching yellow Sun Ice snow pants, size 10
- Two matching White Ram knit sweaters in yellow, white, and purple color patterns, sizes 2 and 4
- Three wool winter beanie hats, the two with stringed pom-poms made by Murray Merkley
In overall fine condition, with some light marks or stains. Accompanied by four bronze-tone key chains, several stickers and window decals, and a drawstring Olympic gift bag.
Of historical note, five years after the 1988 Calgary Games, this apparel was dusted off and reworn when the consignor and other dedicated Olympic volunteers served as extras in the 1993 Disney movie Cool Runnings, which was filmed in Calgary. ‘Working with John Candy was very rewarding as he was such a wonderful person, who was touched by the story of the Jamaican bobsled team.’ As it turns out, Cool Runnings was Candy’s final film released in his lifetime.
