Description

Gold, silver, and bronze winner's medal set from Calgary '88, the first Canadian Winter Olympics

Wonderful set of sample winners’ medals from the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics, which were presented to John Nixon, chairman of the Bobsleigh Committee of the XV Olympic Winter Games, which famously saw the debut of a national bobsleigh team from Jamaica. The set features gorgeous examples of gold, silver, and bronze winner's medals, which are presented together in a dual-paned wooden display case prepared by the mint (Jostens, Inc.), measuring to an overall size of 13.5˝ x 7.25˝ x 3.25˝, with plaques affixed to the top, "Official Sport Medal, XV Olympic Winter Games" and "John Nixon, In Appreciation.”

The fronts of the Olympic medals depict combined profiles of a laureated athlete and a First Nations indigenous person whose headdress is formed by winter sporting equipment. All have bilingual text on the reverse, "XVes Jeux Olympiques d'hiver, XV Olympic Games, Calgary 1988," and a stylized snowflake/maple leaf emblem of the Games and the Olympic rings at center. Accompanied by a bronze volunteer participation medal from the Calgary Games, with its original gray presentation case and booklet.

These official winner's medal displays were created in extremely limited quantities and were presented exclusively to members of the Calgary Winter Olympic Organizing Committee; this being just the third we have seen offered at public auction. These medals would be highly desirable individually; to have the complete set together, in its original display case, is truly spectacular—this is a bona fide Olympic treasure from the first Canadian Winter Olympics.
