U.S. Army general (1883-1953) who commanded Allied forces in the Philippines during World War II and received the Medal of Honor for his leadership during the Japanese invasion. He oversaw the largest surrender of American forces in May 1942 at Corregidor and became the highest-ranking American prisoner of war, enduring three years of harsh captivity. After his release in 1945, he was celebrated as a hero and promoted to four-star general. Two items: an ink signature, "J. M. Wainwright,” on an off-white 4 x 2.5 card; and a vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 U.S. Army Signal Corps portrait photo of the four-star general, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Mrs. Holland Smith, Sincerely, J. M. Wainwright, General USA.” In very good to fine condition, with creases and silvering to the photo.
