Description

Limited edition scrapbook binder entitled ‘The Legend of John F. Kennedy,’ which documents John F. Kennedy’s political career from the perspective of the volume’s creator, 1960 presidential campaign volunteer, founder of the Allen Dental Medical Corporation, and Kennedy family friend, Frank Allen Orofino (known professionally as Frank Allen). A limited number of ‘private edition’ copies of the scrapbook were made for President Kennedy’s family, friends, and associates, with this example presented to Orofino’s brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Emily Orofino, whose names are printed on the front of the binder. The book opens to a typed inscription, which reads: “Dedicated in gratitude to Mr. & Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy and Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy who shared with this country and the world John Fitzgerald Kennedy." Below is a handwritten inscription in black ballpoint, “To my dear brother Michael & Emily, Frank Allen Orofino,” who appears to have written the edition number to the lower left, “51.”

Focusing on President Kennedy’s United States Senate career, his 1960 presidential campaign, and his presidency, the scrapbook contains over 100 photographic prints and over 40 photocopied letters, which includes facsimiles of correspondence between Orofino and members of the Kennedy family, including Senator (later President) John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Patricia Kennedy Lawford, Robert F. and Ethel Skakel Kennedy, and Ted Kennedy.

Photographs include images of the Kennedy family, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Lady Bird Johnson, campaign aide and later White House Press Secretary Pierre Salinger, entertainer Frank Sinatra, Archbishop of New York Cardinal Francis Spellman, Larry O’Brien, secretary to then-Senator Kennedy and later Mrs. Kennedy’s Press Secretary, and many others affiliated with the Kennedy family and administration. Photographs are accompanied by facsimiles of Orofino’s handwritten captions and notations.

Included with the scrapbook is its original presentation letter dated March 21, 1969, printed letters from Jackie Kennedy, a printed photo of JFK and LBJ with facsimile signatures, and two TLSs from Robert F. Kennedy, both signed “Bob,” United States Senate letterhead, December 6, 1966 and March 6, 1968, with the latter reading: “I want you to know how much I appreciated receiving the sterling silver pen set. I am pleased to have it.” An example of the sterling silver pen is included, as is a 1964 Kennedy half-dollar coin set with a pendant. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a printed edition information sheet for the scrapbook.
